Surrey's Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend published figures last month that are genuinely worth celebrating: 305 fewer residential burglaries between August 2024 and August 2025, and a 56% rise in charges. That's not spin. That's a meaningful drop, and it reflects real work by officers and, frankly, by homeowners who've taken security more seriously over the past few years.

But here's the thing. Surrey Police are simultaneously preparing to launch their annual autumn burglary campaign. They wouldn't bother if the darker months didn't still carry heightened risk. Both things are true at once: the trend is improving, and the next six weeks are still the period when your home is most likely to be targeted.

So which story should you take away? Both. The good news tells you the countermeasures work. The campaign timing tells you to act now, before the clocks change on 26 October, while there's still daylight to check your doors properly.

Why Autumn Specifically

It's not complicated. Dusk starts falling before people get home from work. Opportunist burglars prefer darkness and an empty street. Houses in Ham, Petersham and along the TW10 corridor, where larger detached properties sit behind long driveways, become harder to observe from the road by 5pm. That's a practical cover that doesn't exist in July.

There's also a pattern with summer holidays ending. People return from time away, leave suitcases visible through bay windows, bring new bikes inside that they then leave in an unlocked outbuilding. Habits get looser. Attention drifts.

The good news from the PCC's data is that deterrence works. The charge rate rising to 56% suggests that when burglars are caught, they're being prosecuted. That changes the risk calculation for would-be offenders. But a deterrent only works if it's visible, and that starts at your front door.

What the PCC's Data Doesn't Tell You

The 305-fewer figure is an aggregate across the whole of Surrey. It doesn't tell you whether East Sheen improved at the same rate as Reigate, or whether North Sheen's Victorian terrace stock, with its ageing uPVC doors, is still lagging. Aggregate progress can mask local pockets where nothing much has changed.

I see this at street level. Last month alone I attended three call-outs in St Margarets and two in Mortlake where the existing cylinder was a basic euro-profile lock with no anti-snap feature at all. Snap it in thirty seconds with a pair of pliers you can buy at any hardware shop, and the door opens. Those homeowners had no idea. They assumed because the door was double-glazed and ten years old, it was secure. It wasn't.

The Three Things to Check Before the Clocks Change

Your cylinder. Pull up your door and look at it. Does it protrude more than 3mm beyond the face of the fitting? If yes, it's vulnerable to snapping. A TS007 3-star cylinder, Ultion, Avocet ABS, Mul-T-Lock are all solid choices, costs between £35 and £80 fitted, depending on size. That's the single most cost-effective security upgrade available for a standard front door.

Your door alignment. A uPVC door that's dropped even slightly will put stress on the locking points rather than spreading load across the multi-point system. The door doesn't lock properly when it's misaligned, even if the mechanism is fine. You'll feel it: a little resistance at the top, a slight rattle in wind. A locksmith can adjust the hinges and realign the keep in under an hour.

Your lock standard vs your insurer's requirement. Most home insurance policies in the UK require front doors to be fitted with a BS3621-certified lock as a minimum. Many newer policies specify PAS24-compliant door sets or TS007 3-star cylinders by name. If your lock doesn't meet the standard written into your policy schedule, a successful break-in could see your claim disputed. Not rejected outright necessarily, but complicated. Check the schedule, not the summary.

My Honest Take on the Campaign

Police awareness campaigns do move the needle. The PCC's data suggests they contribute to the trend. But a leaflet through the door doesn't upgrade your cylinder, and a social media post doesn't fix a misaligned keep. The campaign is a prompt. The action has to come from you.

If you're a landlord with rental properties in TW9 or TW10, this applies doubly. You have a duty of care, your tenants may not flag a sticky door until something goes wrong, and an unoccupied property between tenancies is a standing target. A two-hour check across your portfolio now costs far less than a break-in, a claim, and a damaged relationship with a tenant who feels let down.
